Radio 2000:
2000 was a fantastic year for me because my collaborator etta cetera & I got to go to Malaysia & Australia & were very, very busy there for 3 months. Our initial motive for going there was to participate in, & basically CREATE, what became (un)known as the "1st Non-Existent International Neoist Apartment Festival in the Year 000".
The 1st radio presentation was in Adelaide, where the festival was(n't) happening. Through our host, Karen Eliot, we were introduced to Roman (& Tony) who had the "Environments" program on 3D radio. This gave me the opportunity to play excerpts from the "RATical Ratio - pRAT 1" CD-R as part of the discussion on mediascapes. etta was usually present at this programs but didn't always feel like participating.
All of the tracks, except for Track 4, were recorded with a camcorder in the studio rather than off the mixing board. As such, the mix is poor & often incomplete & talking that wasn't audible to the audience is audible here.
Here's an excerpt from my account of the "2nd Secret Meeting of the 1st Non-Existent International Neoist Apartment Festival in the Year 000" as found here: http://idioideo.pleintekst.nl/MereOutline2000.html :
"[W]e decided to have the secret meeting on the radio if the people at 3D would allow it. Karen & I went there & talked with various people - eventually asking for permission from the Station Manager. It was quite a challenge for my charm to explain that we were in the midst of having the 1st NON-EXISTENT INTERNATIONAL NEOIST APARTMENT FESTIVAL & that our plans to have our Secret Meeting in the stormdrain had been foiled by the rain & that we wanted to have our Secret Meeting over the air (&, therefore, audible to the general public) as an alternative because we thought it was FUNNY &, uh, is that ok? It's to the enormous credit of the 3D personnel & their true COMMUNITY SPIRIT that they were amenable to the idea & @ 6:00PM (when else?) we began the 2nd Secret Meeting broadcast as a part of the show hosted by Hannah called something like "Drive-Time" & aimed at people driving home from work. Hannah was completely bemused & thoroughly friendly & cooperative as I played sound effects from my PLAYER-BELT, played the HUMAN SYNTHESIZER, discussed the 1st NON-EXISTENT INTERNATIONAL NEOIST APARTMENT FESTIVAL & our plans & details for the 3rd Secret Meeting to be convened the next day (Thursday, March 22nd) @ double 6:00 (more commonly known as "noon") in front of the Church of Scientology on Waymouth Street, exchanged Secret Handshake Messages, & interviewed the attendees that Karen led to the studio window (since station rules didn't allow them to enter the building). Karen played didjeridoo, Rick (as the representative of Pope Fred) spoke in ways determined by text on prepared cards (such as categories like "dogmatic statement"), Bird-E appeared & got slotted into the role of ANTI-NEOIST, Roman said a few words, & a woman happened by who may've refused to speak."
Again, given that this is a camcorder recording, it's difficult to hear things that wd've been more audible to the radio listenership. For one thing, the people outside the window had a mic put close to them at some points & were, therefore, more audible to the radio listeners than they were from the camcorder's position which was 10 or 15 feet further away.
Track 3 finds us in Melbourne where we appeared on a nationally syndicated radio program called "Anarchist World This Week" & hosted by Joe. Our friend Michael, who was the sound technician for the program, had warned us that Joe tended to aggressively (but good-naturedly) put his guests on the spot. Because of this, I decided to enter the studio immediately taking a completely over-the-top (& satirical) critical stance to catch Joe off-guard. Don't be alarmed by my seeming hostility - I was completely kidding. Interested people can see footage from the "Money Against Capitalism" portion of this program here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yi9PTR99xE .
The same Michael had a program called "Let Your Freak Flag Fly" & he was kind enough to invite me on it to play an extended set. Track 4 is the entirety of that.
While in Australia, etta & I learned about the amazing & hilarious media prankster, John Safran. When we learned that he was part of a radio talk show we called in & asked if we could come in person. He agreed & we went there with etta in primitive costume as Ghanesh, the elephant-headed Hindu god. We made a very brief appearance, somewhat to the confusion of our hosts, & left with me saying: "You'll never see us alive again!" - which is likely to be the case. Footage from that can be witnessed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWKRioI7A2U .
Track 6: "Late for Breakfast" with Andrew Bunny & Suzy Ramone. Throughout our stay in Australia, the radio folks were consistently warm & friendly & cooperative. In this case, Andrew had even done a little research on the neoist festival by reading my report on it. This was my last radio appearance in Australia before returning to the us@.
